Daniel Chacón - Captain
Highly experienced fishing captain in Quepos, Costa Rica.
Originally from Playas del Coco, Guanacaste, Daniel grew up connected to fishing and the ocean. For the past four years, he has focused his experience on the waters of Quepos and Costa Rica’s Central Pacific, developing a particular appreciation for the area’s world-class sailfish fishery and diverse offshore fishing opportunities.
As Captain of RECKLESS, Daniel specializes in trolling and bottom fishing, but believes a successful charter is about much more than finding fish. His priorities are keeping guests safe and comfortable, working closely with his crew, and helping everyone aboard—from experienced anglers to first-time fishermen—feel involved in the day.
That same philosophy extends to the fish. Daniel emphasizes responsible fish handling and release, taking the time to explain proper techniques and why returning billfish and other release species to the water in good condition matters to the future of Costa Rica’s sport fishery.
After nearly two years aboard RECKLESS, Daniel doesn’t point to a trophy or single catch as his greatest achievement. What matters most to him is seeing a guest’s excitement when everything comes together and knowing they are heading back to Quepos with a story they will remember.

Roy Smith — Mate
Originally from Puerto Limón, Costa Rica, Roy Smith has worked professionally on the water since 2001. More than two decades of experience have taken him from small boats to offshore sportfishing, where he developed a particular passion for billfishing and trolling with dead bait.
As Mate aboard RECKLESS, Roy brings that experience directly to the guest. He takes pride in having the tackle and boat prepared when the opportunity arrives, but equally enjoys helping anglers understand what is happening around them—explaining the species, fishing techniques and tackle, and helping both experienced and first-time anglers get more from their day on the water.
His career has included memorable catches such as a 150-pound wahoo and a 270-pound tournament-caught tuna, but Roy’s approach to sportfishing also reflects a strong respect for the resource. He practices responsible fish handling and release, participates in fish-tagging efforts supporting scientific research, and makes a point of collecting plastics and other marine debris encountered offshore.
Whether chasing billfish offshore from Quepos or fishing Costa Rica’s estuaries in his free time, fishing remains an important part of Roy’s life. When he’s not on the water, he especially enjoys spending time with his family.
